💧 The History Behind the Festival
More than just a fair, the Sequim Irrigation Festival honors a moment that transformed the region forever: the successful construction of an irrigation ditch in 1895 that brought water from the Dungeness River to Sequim’s sun-drenched prairie — turning arid land into fertile farmland and launching the agricultural success of the area.
Legend has it, the original celebration on May 1, 1896, was a jubilant, muddy, and slightly improvised affair. Families arrived by wagon, on horseback, and even by bicycle ferry from Port Townsend. Locals and “city folk” gathered for a massive potluck, where kids literally jumped into clay-filled ditches to help channel the first flow of water to the prairie. And it worked, skeptics were silenced, and the Sequim Irrigation Festival was born.
